Mr. Kevin Garay to Succeed Dr. Chip Buckwell as Superintendent of Kannapolis City Schools

May 27, 2021

On May 27, 2021, the Kannapolis City Board of Education voted to hire Mr. Kevin Garay as its new superintendent of schools.  The Board, the school system, and the community are very fortunate to have such a qualified and proven leader to step into this position.  He will begin in the role effective July 1, 2021, and will work with retiring Superintendent Dr. Chip Buckwell between now and the end of June.

“Mr. Garay has proved himself over and over during his time in Kannapolis, and he quickly rose to the top as we conducted our search,” said board chair Todd Adams.  “We look forward to working with Mr. Garay as he continues the great things already happening in KCS, and works with staff and faculty members to develop innovative ways to educate our students.  Kevin has a great reputation in the region, and we are excited to see what he brings to his new position.”

Mr. Garay has over 20 years of experience in the field of education, serving as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and, most recently, as assistant superintendent of Kannapolis City Schools from August 2019 to present.  During his tenure as assistant superintendent with KCS, Mr. Garay has demonstrated his commitment to improving student learning and staff development.  He led representatives from the Board of Education, KCS staff, parents and community members to structure the district’s 2020-2025 Strategic Plan, coordinated the district’s work on remote learning and hybrid instruction during the pandemic, and has participated in much of the district’s equity effort in his current role.

He has received numerous awards and accolades including Principal of the Year in both the Kannapolis City Schools and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools systems.  Additionally, he is involved in many community initiatives, including Leadership Cabarrus, the Cabarrus County Chamber of Commerce Board, the Kannapolis Rotary Club and the Cabarrus Health Alliance collaborative.

Mr. Garay shared he is excited to accept the position as only the eighth Superintendent for the Kannapolis City Schools.  Further, he is looking forward to continuing the work to help KCS meet its goals and fulfill its mission.

Mr. Garay is seeking an education doctorate (Ed.D.) from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and has a Master of Arts in School Administration from Gardner-Webb University.  He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Geography, all from Concord University in Athens, West Virginia.

The Board wishes to thank the staff, students, families and community members for their valuable input during the search process.  Mr. Garay was unanimously selected from a national candidate pool with thirty-two highly qualified applicants.

Please join us in welcoming Mr. Garay as the new superintendent.
