Will Gibson named KCS Principal of the Year

Jackson Park Elementary School Principal, Will Gibson, has been named Kannapolis City Schools’ 2020-2021 Principal of the Year. Superintendent Dr. Chip Buckwell, Mr. Gibson’s family and other KCS staff members surprised Gibson by announcing the Principal of the Year honor during a meeting at the district office.

Will Gibson became principal of Jackson Park Elementary in June 2020.  Before that, Mr. Gibson served as principal of Shady Brook Elementary where he led students and staff in meeting expected growth six out of seven school years and exceeding expected growth two out of seven school years.

"Mr. Gibson is an outstanding principal and his qualities have certainly been highlighted during the transition to Jackson Park,” says Assistant Superintendent, Kevin Garay.  “He is extremely hardworking, an excellent communicator, and he is continuously proactive and forward-thinking in school improvement.  His commitment to practicing these qualities has resulted in a very effective transition to Jackson Park."

Superintendent, Dr. Chip Buckwell, agrees that Will Gibson is an exceptional leader.  “Mr. Gibson always had the ‘it’ factor,” Dr. Buckwell shared.  “He followed a legend at Shady Brook and is following another principal legend at Jackson Park.  His ability to build and enhance teams, as well as communicate with new and experienced employees, is so important to building and enhancing culture.  He also understands and practices listening to teacher leaders and the community.  His laser focus on student success has built capacity in staff everywhere he has worked!  The best thing I can say about Will Gibson is he is the kind of principal I'd want for my children.  KCS is proud to have him represent us as our principal of the year where #WondersNeverCease.”

Mr. Gibson earned his Master of School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and he holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Roanoke College in Virginia.  He will now represent Kannapolis City Schools in the regional competition for North Carolina Principal of the Year.
