Adjusted Bell Schedules for 2019-2020

The school day will start and end a little earlier each day for elementary and high school students in KCS beginning in August. The school board approved a slightly revised bell schedule during its June meeting.

The new KCS bell schedule will allow elementary schools to begin at 8:20 a.m. instead of the current 8:45 a.m. Elementary schools will dismiss at 3:20 in the afternoon, which will be 20 minutes earlier than they dismiss now. Under the new schedule, A.L. Brown High School will begin at 7:45 a.m. and will dismiss at 2:45 p.m. each day. The bell schedule for Kannapolis Middle School will remain essentially the same. The chart below shows the revised start and dismissal times for the 2019-2020 school year:

Bell Schedule

The new bell schedule will mean that elementary schools will be able to start and end earlier each day, which is a request that the district had received from many elementary level families and staff. The current start time of 8:40 a.m. is a hardship for many parents who need to be at work by 8:00 a.m., and some elementary students get home after 4:30 pm each day. However, under the new schedule, elementary school doors will open at 7:50 a.m. each day, and elementary students will get home sooner each afternoon. Even with the earlier start times in 2019-2020, the district will continue to offer its low-cost before school care program at elementary schools.

KCS will be able to update its bell schedule without changing the way it transports students on buses. It will continue to keep its middle school, high school, and elementary bus routes separate. On a recent survey, many parents requested that the district keep bus routes separate instead of combining some high school and middle school routes to save time and allow elementary schools to start and end sooner. “We have worked really hard to make our bell schedule and our transportation system meet the needs of students and families,” said KCS Superintendent, Dr. Chip Buckwell. “Our transportation department has done a fantastic job of finding ways to save time on the bus routes without putting high school and middle school students together on buses. The system they have worked out will allow us to meet our goal of improving our bell schedule while making our bus system even more efficient. I am really proud of all they have done.”

The first day of school for the 2019-2020 school year will be Wednesday, August 14. That is when the new bell schedule will begin. KCS will continue offering its low-cost Before School Care program. Starting in August, Before School Care will begin at 7:10 a.m. at KCS elementary schools. For families that do not use the KCS Before School Care program, doors will open at elementary schools at 7:50 a.m. Parents will be able to sign up for Before School Care beginning in July.
