December Board of Education Recognitions

The Kannapolis Board of Education was proud to honor outstanding representatives from around the district at its December meeting.

G.W. Carver Elementary School

Levi is one of our second grade leaders at G.W. Carver. This young lady has such a huge heart, she is always caring for other students and is a great friend. Levi puts forth 100% effort each and every day and works incredibly hard with her learning and also showcasing great behavior. Levi loves to learn new things and is quick to participate, she also likes to share her creativity through the arts.

Levi is always paying very close attention to detail while completing her schoolwork and will often ask if she can lend a helping hand to others. Her teacher Mrs. Morgan shares, “Levi is such an amazing student! She is always SOARING in all areas of the school and is such a great role model setting a wonderful example for her classmates!”

Mateo is one of our third grade ‘Superstars’ at G.W. Carver who is such a kind hearted and respectful young man! Mateo has a beaming smile on his face in all places and spaces, his joyous spirit is contiguous to so many others on a regular basis. He is a great friend to his classmates at Carver, everyone enjoys his positive attitude and being around him.

Mateo is so talented in the arts and enjoys going to his Encore classes especially art, it’s often he is drawing or creating masterpieces out of a simple piece of paper. His teacher Ms. Katie states, “Mateo exemplifies the character of a star student because he puts forth kindness in everything he does. He always comes in with a warm greeting and a huge smile on his face. He knows how to make his teachers and friends laugh at any part of the day. He has made so much progress with his communication and making sure he shows off his voice in class. We are so proud of Mateo!”

The schoolhouse is a place that needs a strong support network simply because of all that goes into a given day. Mrs. Staci Sheffield is an Instructional Assistant at G.W. Carver who goes above and beyond each and every day to provide whatever is needed within the schoolhouse to students and staff. She sets expectations high for not only herself but also all the students she engages with by holding them accountable for their learning, effort and character. Staci is very thorough with all that she teaches and understands how students learn best. She very much takes the approach of hands-on learning and leading by example.

Staci is never shy to ask questions to better what she does within her role and is also an advocate for students and staff. Staci is also a huge support with driving the bus for GWC field trips which is always such a positive experience for our students. A colleague shares “Mrs. Sheffield is always asking what she can do for others and goes out of her way to make sure it gets done. She is kind, always smiling and is just a joy to be around. She works tirelessly with students on their individual needs and praises them on their growth!”  We couldn’t agree more and are so very lucky to have Mrs. Sheffield as part of the GW Carver family!

Mrs. Winston Barger has brought so much to G.W. Carver the past four years that she has been an EAGLE! We knew we had a ‘rockstar’ from her interview but WOW, we got so much more! Winston is so incredibly gifted at understanding the content and standards we are expected to teach. Weekly she supports her colleagues with the ‘what’ and ‘how’ to instruct from lesson plans during PLC time. Day to day learning within her classroom is exciting and fun with students always engaged with hands-on learning.

Winston also has a way of holding high expectations and accountability for students while also establishing and maintaining positive relationships with all of her students. It’s easy to see her students adore her and want to please her with all that they do. One of her colleague’s states, “Mrs. Barger is an outstanding teacher who advocates for her students on a daily basis. Her dedication is motivating to everyone around her because she is always willing to try something new and do whatever it takes to set her students up for success. She supports her students and recognizes all that they are capable of and pushes them towards becoming the best version of themselves.”

The Board was also pleased to recognize the Hilbish Ford Teacher of the Month, Ashley Brooks, teacher, G.W. Carver Elementary School.

Ashley Brooks is being recognized as our Teacher of the Month for the outstanding dedication and compassion she brings to her classroom each day. She consistently goes above and beyond for her students, ensuring that they not only learn, but also feel supported, valued, and understood. Her commitment shines through in the way she anticipates student needs, provides thoughtful guidance, and creates a classroom environment where everyone feels welcome.

What truly sets Ashley apart is her deep empathy. She cares for each student as if they were her own, building meaningful connections that help students feel safe and confident in their learning. Her kindness, patience, and unwavering belief in her students make a lasting impact, and we are grateful for the heart and professionalism she brings to our school community each day.

We’re extremely proud to have Ashley Brooks as a part of our KCS family.  We’re also delighted, on behalf of Hilbish Ford, to present her with the Hilbish Ford Teacher of the Month Award for December.  Congratulations, Ashley!
