Kannapolis City Schools Announces Retirement of Head Start Director and Appointment of Successor

Kannapolis, NC — May 11, 2026 — Kannapolis City Schools (KCS) proudly announces the retirement of Dr. Jennifer Baucom, Director of Head Start at McKnight Child Development Center, following more than two decades of dedicated service to the district.

Dr. Baucom has been a valued member of the KCS family since 2004 and has served as Director of Head Start since 2010. Throughout her tenure, she has been a steadfast advocate for young learners and families, bringing deep expertise in early childhood education, Head Start, and North Carolina Pre-K programs. Her leadership has played a vital role in ensuring high-quality early learning experiences and strong foundational support for the district’s youngest students.

“Dr. Baucom’s impact on Kannapolis City Schools is immeasurable,” said Superintendent Dr. Sara Newell. “Her knowledge, leadership, and unwavering commitment to early childhood education have shaped programs that will benefit students and families for years to come. We are deeply grateful for her service and wish her the very best in her retirement.”

At its May meeting, the Kannapolis City Board of Education approved Ms. Waynett Taylor as the next Director of Head Start at McKnight Child Development Center.

Ms. Taylor brings a wealth of experience in early childhood education and leadership. She currently serves as Executive Director of Professional Unique Resources in Education with Excellence (P.U.R.E. Excellence). Her previous roles include Executive Director of Lockhart Child Development Center in Concord, Early Childhood and School-Age Programs Chair and Adjunct Faculty member at Rowan County Community College, and elementary lead teacher in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.

In addition to her professional roles, Ms. Taylor has actively contributed to numerous early childhood committees and boards, advocating for students and families across the region.

Ms. Taylor holds an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Davidson County Community College, a Bachelor’s degree in Education with a concentration in Social Work from Winston-Salem State University, a Master of Education (Birth–Grade 3) from Capella University, and a Master of Education in Special Education (PreK–Grade 12) from Grand Canyon University.

“We are excited to welcome Ms. Taylor to Kannapolis City Schools,” said Dr. Newell. “Her experience, passion for early childhood education, and commitment to serving children and families make her an excellent choice to continue the strong legacy of our Head Start program.”
