The Kannapolis Board of Education was proud to recognize outstanding representatives from McKnight Head Start as the honorees for November, 2017. We are very grateful to the Mary Beth Burgess State Farm Insurance Agency for donating $100 to the McKnight library in appreciation of the honorees.

  • Nathan de la Cruz:  When Nathan de la Cruz arrives at school, a smile is plastered across his face. He loves painting with watercolors, and he is mastering the art of building with blocks. He is enthusiastic about making monster faces and attempting to scare his teacher. His day is now filled with giggles and friendships. We know this is only the early stage of his growth and that he will continue to progress. We are excited about his future.

  • Mercades Patterson:  Mercades Patterson is in her second year of attending McKnight Head Start. Her personality inspires her classmates to be more compassionate and empathetic. She is a role model and encourages her peers to use their manners. Her polite demeanor displays her citizenship, and she never lets anything hold her back. She has so much fun being mobile in her wheelchair on the playground. Head Start staff recall her facial expression the first time she used her motorized wheelchair. It was priceless.

  • Kim Peugh: Kim Peugh has the reputation of a woman with a heart of gold. When teachers and other staff were asked about her contributions to McKnight and the community, they could not narrow down which story to tell. They told many stories of her supporting students and families. Just last week, she heard of a need for clothing and clothes were immediately donated. She consistently steps forward to provide for others in need. Kim is an integral part of McKnight’s Backpack Buddies program, where donated food items are distributed to families in need on a weekly basis. She teams up with her husband, Larry, to haul 75 heavy bags of food all over the McKnight campus. They are undaunted by the physical labor because they know it results in well-fed and well-nourished children. When she is not substituting or working with her ministries, she is enjoying time in the kitchen. She is known to the staff of McKnight as a phenomenal baker and cook.

  • Barbara Lindskog: Barbara Lindskog’s approach to being a teacher assistant extends far beyond the classroom. Her dedication to providing individualized and unique experiences for students leads her to research arts and crafts for hours outside of the school day. She is skilled in partnering with teachers to bring to life the many ideas that pique her interest. She also is the Queen of the Laminator Machine. McKnight’s bulletin boards and classrooms would be lacking if it weren’t for her laminating skills. Her approach to students is consistently warm and caring. It is as though she is filled with a never ending supply of love. That supply is a source of sunshine not only for students but also for McKnight’s staff. The very mention of her name brings a warm glow to all of her peers.

  • Stephanie Troutman: Stephanie Troutman serves McKnight in a critical and powerful position. The job of Environmental Specialist can make or break a school. McKnight has rigorous standards of cleanliness, and Ms. Troutman is responsible for meeting them. She regularly exceeds the expectations of her job. She is known for her strong work ethic, her meticulous attention to detail, and her ability to do any job without batting an eyelash. To continue singing Ms. Troutman’s praises, it should be noted that she is respectful, professional, and not scared of hard work. She’s also funny, passionate about her service to others, compassionate, humble, intuitive, and considerate.

  • Keyonia Blair: Keyonia Blair has been a member of McKnight’s team since March 2016. In that short time, she has made a large impact on the children and staff. She takes great pride in harnessing students’ independent spirits and enabling their growth. Much of her time is spent crafting a strong rapport with students and their families. She has taken on a leadership role in professional development and has been a role model to all employees at McKnight. Mentoring others utilizes her strongest assets, which are her passion, drive, and commitment to students. She says her family and friends have embraced her teaching career and given her amazing support that has been invaluable to her success.
