First graders from Shady Brook Elementary literally got “on track” for learning to read during a special event at Tweetsie Railroad. Students attended Letterland festivities as a way to learn phonics skills and have fun decoding words. They attended magic shows where entertainers showed them how to transform words like “bit” into “bite” by using the “Magic E.” Students also saw characters who wore the first letter of their names so children could learn sounds that different letters make. Even the traditional “Cowboys and Indians” train ride was transformed into an experience that demonstrated how sounds are made. Besides cowboys and Indians, vowel men tried were on the train ride trying to escape a red robot who wanted to capture their sounds. It was a learning adventure that not only entertained the students but also put them on track to becoming better readers.
