The Kannapolis City School System has received statewide recognition for excellence in communications. Each year, the North Carolina School Public Relations Association honors the outstanding communications work of school districts with its annual Blue Ribbon Awards.

Kannapolis City Schools earned a Blue Ribbon Award for its video, “Creating the Future.” Ellen Boyd, APR, and Jonathan Greene accepted the award. Boyd is Kannapolis City Schools’ Director of Community Relations. Greene is the Digital Media teacher at A.L. Brown High School.  Together, they wrote and produced the video. All entries were judged by the Georgia School Public Relations Association.

NCSPRA President, Sharon Spence, Public Information Officer for Lee County Schools, said the work of the award winners rivaled the best work of public relations practitioners in any field.  “The work of these colleagues was judged to be superior and a credit to the practice of school public relations,” Spence said.  “This roster of excellence is tangible evidence that NCSPRA's public relations professionals are among the nation's finest and that they are producing cutting edge communications and products that support our schools and school systems.”

Prior to the awards ceremony, attendees heard a presentation from Keith Poston, President & Executive Director of the Public School Forum of North Carolina. He shared an analysis of the top 10 education issues for 2015 and their impact on school communications. Nora Carr, APR, also presented to the NCSPRA communicators. She is the Chief of Staff for Guilford County Schools and the immediate Past President of the National School Public Relations Association. During her career of more than 30 years, she has responded to many school crises around the country, including Columbine High School and last year’s tornado damage in Moore County, Oklahoma. Her presentation was entitled “Serving on a PR SWAT Team.”

NCSPRA’s mission is to build support for public education through well-planned and responsible public relations. This year’s Blue Ribbon Awards were presented in Greensboro on January 30th.
