Students in Margie Zimmermann’s 3rd grade class at Shady Brook spent part of their summer vacation honoring a true Kannapolis hero. They visited WWII veteran, Norris Dearmon. They brought him food, get well cards, and a special homemade banner. The banner reflected what the students learned from Dearmon during their Kannapolis History tour earlier in the school year. Dearmon is 91 years old and recovering from an injury. However, he was already up and around and spent time sharing even more history with the students. He showed them his book, My Life Story, and told them about his service during World War II. He also showed them his war medals and other memorabilia. Dearmon is an expert on Kannapolis history and often shares his knowledge with local students. He volunteers in the Kannapolis History Associates’ room at A.L. Brown High School. Dearmon told the students that he brought the first computer to Cannon Mills in 1957. He remained as a computer programmer at Cannon Mills until his retirement.

Mrs. Zimmermann and her students considered it an honor to visit with Norris Dearmon and his wife Dot.  The Dearmons have been married for 72 years and are an amazing treasure for the Kannapolis community.
