As Charlotte’s Discovery Place Science Museum prepared to launch its new STEM Center for Career Development, its leaders wanted to make sure a teacher was part of the Grand Opening ceremony. The teacher they chose was Kannapolis City Schools’ Jacki Lane.  Lane spoke at the grand opening event on May 29th along with the President and CEO of Discovery Place and representatives of Bank of America, Duke Energy, UTC Aerospace Systems, and OrthoCarolina. Lane was the only teacher included in the ceremony.

Jacki Lane teaches STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) at Jackson Park Elementary. She is also part of the prestigious STEM Fellows program sponsored by Discovery Place.  STEM Fellows are some of the region’s top teachers selected by Discovery Place to be part of a special three year program. They learn about STEM content and science education and how to engage in action-based research in their own classrooms. They also learn how to share their knowledge with other teachers and become problem solvers in their communities. Jacki Lane is in her second year as a STEM Fellow. During her remarks at the grand opening, Lane praised the value of the STEM Fellowship. “The impact that the STEM Fellows program has made is immeasurable. I have had the opportunity to collaborate with other teachers and STEM professionals from all around the Charlotte area. The amazing team of Discovery Place employees has created a learning environment where we feel valued as professionals and that fosters a true passion for STEM education.”

Discovery Place’s new STEM Education Center for Career Development will give K-12 teachers essential skills and resources to become inspiring teachers of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The center will provide access to ideas, resources, materials, and equipment that can expand STEM education in their classrooms. Discovery Place will host an Open House for educators on May 31 and will start a series of professional development activities beginning June 2.

The Kannapolis City School District has an ongoing partnership with Discovery Place that helps support the system’s STEM program in all schools and grade levels. KCS also has a total of five teachers who have been selected as STEM Fellows.
