Kannapolis Police Department K-9 Officer, Boone, will have a new protective vest thanks to students at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. Students collected loose change to raise money for protective vests for K-9 officers in the Kannapolis Police Department. STEM Teacher, Sandy Summerlin, says the students wanted to protect the animals that are protecting them. They called their effort, “Coins for K-9s.”

After just three weeks, the students had collected enough pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters to reach nearly $1,000. It was enough to buy a protective vest for one of the Kannapolis Police Department’s K-9 Officers. Boone was the dog that was selected to receive the vest.

On April 21st, the students and Mrs. Summerlin presented a check to Kannapolis Police Chief Woody Chavis for $978. Boone and his KPD handler were there to receive the check as well. The money will be used to buy Boone a bullet and stab proof vest. The students and Mrs. Summerlin hope to raise additional money to provide the second Kannapolis Police K-9 with a protective vest as well.
