Representatives from Kannapolis City Schools were featured presenters during North Carolina’s Collaborative Conference of Student Achievement. The group heard from Shady Brook Elementary School Assistant Principal, Josh Sain, and Shady Brook Guidance Counselor, Donna Gerdes.

Gerdes and Sain highlighted the different ways KCS is giving students a range of social, emotional, and academic supports. Specifically, they explained how KCS is using the Kindergarten Entry Assessment and the Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to help students excel. Sain and Gerdes focused on how KCS uses parts of the Kindergarten Entry Assessment to develop student goals, provide academic support, and help teachers meet all needs of children—social, emotional, and academic. They also explained how KCS embeds the Kindergarten Entry Assessment into staggered entry days at the beginning of the year. Taking this step allows all KCS Kindergarten teachers to begin academic and social/emotional supports much earlier than in past years.

This was the second consecutive year that KCS presenters were featured as part of the Collaborative Conference of Student Achievement.
