Football coaches and trainers from Kannapolis City Schools have earned their certification in a program called Heads Up football. The program is sponsored by USA Football and promotes a safer way to tackle. The program teaches players to keep their heads up during tackles as a way to reduce concussions and other injuries.

In order to be certified, coaches go through classroom instruction and then perform drills that demonstrate proper and safer tackling techniques.  All the coaches and trainers from A.L. Brown High School and Kannapolis Middle School went through the training, which was led by former Concord High School football coach, E.Z. Smith. Smith is now a Heads Up Football instructor for USA Football.

KCS coaches will teach Heads Up tackling techniques during all football practices, and players will use the Heads Up method during games. Kannapolis City Schools is one of the first districts in the state to have its football coaches and staff certified in Heads Up football.
