Kannapolis City Schools has partnered with Food Lion to provide Family Math Nights for students and families at all elementary schools. The Family Math Nights bring students and families together and allow them to build math skills in a real world environment.

During the Math Night events, students get clipboards that contain tasks for them to complete around the store. Each grade level has tasks that are relevant to the math lessons they are learning in school. For example, Kindergartners work on counting, patterns, and finding shapes. First graders estimate and weigh produce items. Second graders compare prices and write “greater than” or “less than” statements. Third graders go on scavenger hunts and write multiplication equations to match the items they find throughout the store. They also compare and find the difference between prices and weights of items. Fourth graders work on planning a healthy meal with $20.00. Students work with their parents to complete their assignments, and teachers are available to help. All KCS elementary schools will be taking part in Family Math Night events.

Food Lion is a corporate partner for the Family Math Nights and is making the South Cannon Boulevard and Oak Avenue store locations in Kannapolis available for the events. Food Lion also provides goody bags, treats, and drinks to everyone who attends.
