Jackson Park Elementary School principal, Dr. Erin Anderson, has been named Kannapolis City Schools’ 2016-17 Principal of the Year. This is the second time in three years that she has earned the district’s top principal honors.

As Jackson Park’s principal, Dr. Anderson has led the school to strong academic achievement. Jackson Park exceeded the state’s expectations for academic growth in 2015-2016. She also has earned accolades from Jackson Park’s staff and parents. One parent, Aaron Beaver, posted an Instagram video recently that thanked Dr. Anderson and her staff for the extraordinary way they reached out to help his children and family after he was involved in a serious accident. “They have been overwhelming,” Beaver said in the video. He thanked the Jackson Park staff for sending cards, providing food, and even helping to take of his children while he was recovering. “We’re just blown away by their generosity,” he said. “Our principal, Erin Anderson, is amazing, and if your kids have the opportunity to come here [Jackson Park Elementary], you will be blessed.”

Dr. Anderson has had tremendous success throughout her career in Kannapolis City Schools. Prior to becoming Jackson Park’s principal in 2014, she served as principal of Fred L. Wilson Elementary. While at Fred L. Wilson, she led the school to achieve high academic growth, and she helped to dramatically improve attendance at the school. Dr. Anderson developed a program that reduced the number of students who were consistently absent by nearly a third. Chronic absenteeism has been shown to reduce math and reading achievement by ten points or more and significantly raise students’ chances of dropping out of school. The program that Dr. Anderson developed cut chronic absenteeism by more than 30% and was the most effective in the district.

Superintendent, Dr. Chip Buckwell, says Erin Anderson is more than just an outstanding principal. “She has an amazing passion for helping children and families,” Buckwell says of Anderson. “You can tell that she cares about her students. You can tell that she cares about her staff and the families at Jackson Park. That translates into great relationships and leads to wonderful results. She’s also a fantastic instructional leader. I’m extremely proud of Dr. Anderson and very pleased that she’s our Principal of the Year. It’s very well deserved.”

Dr. Erin Anderson has been with Kannapolis City Schools since 1999. She began as a teacher at Fred L. Wilson Elementary and became curriculum coordinator of Fred L. Wilson in 2007. She was promoted to principal in 2012. Anderson moved to Jackson Park Elementary in July of 2014. She earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership from Wingate University in 2015. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University and a master’s degree in Special Education from UNC Charlotte. She earned her Principal’s License from Wingate University. Anderson was selected by the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals Association to be part of its Distinguished Leadership Program. She will now represent Kannapolis City Schools in the regional competition for North Carolina Principal of the Year.
