Exciting changes are on the way for KCS students and families beginning in August of 2017.

Starting next August, KCS will launch three new programs for elementary students: A+ ArtsGlobal Studies, and Spanish Language Immersion
All three programs will be open to elementary students from across the district (regardless of the elementary attendance zone where a family lives). Applications for the new programs will open in January.

KCS also will open a new middle school building next August and add a sixth elementary school. Expanding the number of elementary schools will mean KCS will change its current attendance boundaries to include six elementary sites instead of five. The September 19th meeting will give families more information about the proposed attendance zones.

Next year's changes also will include different grade levels in the district's K-8 schools. The current Kannapolis Intermediate School, which now serves grades five and six, will be renovated to become G.W. Carver Elementary. At that time, the district will no longer have an intermediate school. Instead, all fifth graders will attend elementary schools, and all sixth graders will move to the newly expanded Kannapolis Middle School.

The new grade structure in KCS will look like this:

  • Six elementary schools (grades K-5)
  • One middle school (grades 6-8)
  • One high school (grades 9-12).
  • The district will serve all Wee Wonders pre-school students at Woodrow Wilson Elementary.
  • The McKnight Head Start program will remain unchanged.

KCS also will offer new options for families. Beginning next August. G.W. Carver Elementary will host the new A+ Arts program, which will be open to all KCS elementary students. Fred L. Wilson Elementary will host the new Global Studies and Spanish Language Immersion programs. All KCS elementary families will be able to apply to have their children attend the new programs. More information is available by clicking here (video).

KCS will provide more information about all of the upcoming changes during PTO Open House nights this fall at each of the district’s elementary schools.
