The Kannapolis Board of Education was proud to honor outstanding representatives from A.L. Brown High School at its May meeting.

We are very grateful to the Mary Beth Burgess State Farm Insurance Agency for donating $100 to the A.L. Brown library in appreciation of the honorees.

Langley Simpson:  Langley is an extraordinary student not only because of her excellent grades but also because of her work ethic and personality. She serves as a guidance page and goes above and beyond to fulfill her duties. Ms. Pitts says that Langley helps in every situation whether it’s working with other students or helping teachers with classes. She says Langley is the face of A.L. Brown High School in both the main office and in student services. Her heart is with helping others and making A.L. Brown a better place. Langley’s smile is contagious, and her personality is infectious as she performs her duties each day. She works at East Coast Wings and is recognized by her peers and managers as an outstanding server. We are extremely proud of Langley and her accomplishments.

Marco Gonzalez:  Marco is a remarkable student with an inspiring story. He has only been in the United States since 2010, but next year he will attend Duke University. He earned the prestigious Rubenstein Scholarship, which will give him a full ride to Duke. He was selected from among more than 32,000 applicants, and he will be the first in his family to attend college. He loves math and will be studying engineering. He is a natural leader and serves as president of the National Honor Society. He also is a strong part of the Beta Club Robotics team, which will compete for a national title in Florida in June. Mr. Stegall, Marco’s Engineering Teacher and Beta Club advisor, says Marco is a hard worker, a great student, and an even better person. Marco is every principal and teacher’s dream student.

Club Vertical:    Anson Phillips is a youth pastor for the Refuge Church in Kannapolis. He comes to A.L. Brown each Monday to lead students through Club Vertical, a program focused on leadership and character. Anson chose A.L. Brown as a site for Club Vertical because he wants to connect with our community and impact the young people of Kannapolis in a positive way. Anson says that, “The most rewarding part of working with students is the moment they see for themselves what you see in them. We believe that every student, regardless of background, economic status, or family history, has something truly valuable to offer. It's amazing when you see students realize the destiny and purpose that is already inside of them.”  Everyone at A.L. Brown appreciates the impact Anson Phillips is having on the lives of students.

Alisha Ryan:  Alisha’s title of Cyber Campus Facilitator barely scratches the surface of what she contributes to our students, school, and district. She serves as the liaison with the North Carolina School of Science and Math, which includes supervising daily live broadcasts as well as facilitating enrichment programs and hands-on labs for KCS fifth graders. She is responsible for monitoring and supervising students who use other online learning options such as iKann, Credit Recovery, and NC Virtual Public School courses. Some of Mrs. Ryan’s most valuable contributions are related to graduation. She helps maintain the graduation list of seniors, designs and prints programs, helps with the honors receptions, graduation walks, and graduation practice. When asked about this recognition, Ms. Ryan wanted to decline the recognition and stay out of the limelight. However, after some convincing, she agreed to be honored. Mrs. Ryan makes a very positive difference for students every day, and she is a tremendous asset to A.L. Brown and Kannapolis City Schools.

Belinda Rojo:  Belinda Rojo is an outstanding and inspirational Social Studies teacher at A.L. Brown. She is an A.L. Brown graduate, and she knows the commitment it takes to be a great teacher. What makes Ms. Rojo so special is her ability to connect with students. She understands how demanding life can be, especially for students living in difficult situations. She gives of her time, her energy, and even her pocket book to make students’ lives better. She also gives of her time planning and organizing large school-wide events such as the prom, Homecoming, and Miss A.L. Brown. A.L. Brown is a better place because of Ms. Rojo and we are fortunate to work with her each day.
