During its June meeting, the Kannapolis City Board of Education honored the KCS outstanding secondary math teachers of the year: Felicia Shepard, Ryan Graham, and Evelyn Carrasquillo.

Ryan Graham is an eighth grade teacher at Kannapolis Middle School. He graduated from Miami University in Ohio and has a Master’s degree in Middle Grades Education from UNC-Charlotte. He inspires his students to achieve tremendous academic growth and is considered a teacher leader and technology expert throughout the district. He also has presented at state and regional conferences and has served as a mentor to beginning teachers. He is an outstanding math teacher nominee from Kannapolis Middle School.

Evelyn Carrasquillo teaches Math III at A.L. Brown and has taught all levels of high school math. She graduated from Florida International University and holds certifications in multiple areas of math as well as certification to teach Academically and Intellectually Gifted students. She has been selected to lead Kannapolis City Schools’ district-wide math professional development and is helping to develop the district’s high school math curriculum. She also has spent summers working with the S.T.A.R.S. program, which encourages students to become leaders and make good decisions. Her classroom fosters collaboration and high academic achievement, and she is an outstanding math teacher nominee.

Among all of these impressive nominees, Felicia Shepard has been chosen as the district-wide winner of the Outstanding Secondary Math Teacher of the Year Award. Felicia is a sixth grade teacher at Kannapolis Intermediate School. She graduated from UNC-Charlotte and has six years of teaching experience. She continually seeks to learn more about math instruction and fearlessly tries new strategies to foster her students’ understanding of math. She uses digital tools and projects in her classroom that allow her to constantly measure her students’ understanding and keep them engaged in learning. Felicia serves on the KCS Secondary Math Vertical Alignment Team and is on the KCS Curriculum Design Team.

For being named Kannapolis City Schools Math Teacher of the Year, Felicia Shepard will receive a certificate of merit, personalized recognition, and one year's membership in the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She also will be recognized at the Fall Conference of the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and her name will appear in the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics journal, the Centroid.
