The Kannapolis City Board of Education is considering the possibility of having two school calendars for the 2018-19 school year. For the first time, it is possible for KCS to have two school calendars due to new flexibility the state has given to A.L. Brown High School and KMS. Those two schools are now allowed to adopt calendars that meet the needs of their students without following the strict calendar rules set down by the state. Most KCS elementary schools do not have that flexibility and still must follow the state’s rules. KCS is considering adopting two calendars for the 2018-19 school year in order to meet the needs of older students and take advantage of the additional flexibility.

If KCS did adopt a separate calendar for the secondary level, A.L. Brown students would be able to finish exams before Christmas and be on a similar schedule with Rowan Cabarrus Community College (RCCC). Matching calendars with RCCC is important because many A.L. Brown students take courses at RCCC and earn free college credit through the district’s partnership with the community college.

No decision has been made yet about the 2018-19 school calendar. The board is expected to vote on the 2018-19 school calendar at its meeting on February 12th
